History

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was founded in Los Angeles, California, in 1974 by a group of engineers employed by the City of Los Angeles. Their vision was to create a national organization that would serve as a network of support and role models for the Hispanic community in STEM. Built on the power of networking and community, SHPE quickly expanded by establishing student chapters across the United States and beyond. 

Today, SHPE continues to empower Hispanics in STEM through leadership development, academic support, professional advancement, and community engagement. As one of the nation’s leading organizations dedicated to diversity in STEM, SHPE proudly includes:

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers at the University of Pittsburgh (SHPE Pitt) was established in 2001 by Dr. Sylvanus N. Wosu to promote diversity, leadership, and community among Hispanic students in STEM. As part of SHPE Region 4, our chapter connects students with a nationwide network of professionals, mentors, and corporate partners.

We are more than an organization, we are a familia. We support undergraduate and graduate students through professional development workshops, networking opportunities, leadership programs, academic support, community service, and collaborations with diverse student organizations.

Our chapter hosts events such as General Body Meetings, resume and interview preparation sessions, social and cultural gatherings, volunteer initiatives with Casa San José, and participation in the SHPE National Convention and regional leadership conferences.

SHPE Pitt is committed to empowering Hispanic students in STEM to achieve their fullest potential academically, professionally, and personally while creating a supportive and inclusive community where every member can thrive.
